Akita
The first Akita ever to arrive in the United States was brought here by Helen Keller. And the more we learned about this beautiful dog, the more interested we became. It's a solid, strong and powerful looking pooch with a curled-up tail and a determined personality, yet owners of the Akita say they are also affectionate and playful.
The Akita is extremely loyal and protective of its family, so much so that years ago Japanese mothers were known to leave their children in the care of the family Akita. Although this type of dog gets along well with children in its family, it can be temperamental with other kids and pets so that is something to be cautious of. The Akita grows to be about 75-120 pounds.
