Tapeworms

Tapeworms are intestinal worms that can be found in dogs, cats, rodents, even humans. Tapeworms are caused when a dog or cat ingests an intermediate host, like fleas or mice, rats, squirrels, etc. Because many dogs and cats ingest fleas either while they're grooming themselves or eating, tapeworms can be a very common problem.

A disgusting yet relatively harmless offender

Though the term tapeworms almost always makes people grimace, the parasite is not usually harmful to the pet and can be eliminated with a single injection from the vet in most cases. Also, there are now medications available over the counter that used to be prescription only.

Most of us have at one time or another seen a tapeworm in our pet, because they come out in small white flat segments in feces. Often, as in the case of cats and shaggy dogs, a segment will get stuck in the hair of the pet's rear end. Gross as they are, and they are gross, Tapeworms cannot be given from one pet to another or to humans through contact, only through the ingestion of the actual intermediate host.
